CHESAPEAKE, VA. — Dec. 26, 2015 — The Virginia State Police reported on Christmas Day that a Chesapeake resident has been charged in a fatal DUI crash on Christmas Eve on Interstate 664 just before the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.
Virginia State police say that Roger L. Yates of Chesapeake was changing lanes in his Dodge Charger. As he merged right, his car ran into a Honda Pilot with five people aboard. The SUV went off the road and into the Jersey wall, where it flipped several times, according to state troopers.
Michael A. Smith, 50, of Chesapeake, Va., who drove the Honda, was reported to be deceased as a result of the actions of Yates. Smith’s wife, Sharolyn, and their children – a 20-year-old son, 18-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter – were taken to Norfolk General Hospital for serious injuries.
Yates, as often happens with drunk or drug impaired drivers, was uninjured in the crash, which occurred almost three miles south of Terminal Avenue on I-664. Yates has been charged with refusing a DUI, DUI maiming and reckless driving.
