12/11/2015 — Virginia State Police report that they investigated a single vehicle accident on the Eastern Shore, which has resulted in a fatality.
On December 9, 2015, at approximately 9:23 P.M., Virginia State Police was called to investigate a single vehicle accident involving serious life threatening injuries. The accident occurred on Route 13 (Lankford Highway) north of Tyler Lane in the County of Accomack.
A 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, driven by Brandon O’Neil West, was traveling northbound Route 13 at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, and the vehicle spun around backwards into the median that separated the north and southbound lanes of Route 13. The vehicle struck a culvert that was in the median, and upon impact, ejected the backseat passenger.
The back seat passenger, Devante Deshawn Harris, suffered major life-threatening injuries and was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury Maryland. Mr. Harris later died of his injuries at the hospital. Family members were notified.
There were four occupants inside the vehicle. All four occupants in the vehicle were not wearing their safety belts, and alcohol was involved. The right rear passenger was critically injured and flown to Norfolk Sentara Hospital. The front seat passenger also suffered major injuries.
The driver, Brandon O’Neil West, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and for driving under the influence.
