There was a weird situation today at the Mariners’ pre-spring-training press conference. Right in the middle of it, TMZ broke the story that infielder Adam Kennedy had been arrested for DUI.
When word filtered out, several reporters afterwards naturally asked Jack Zduriencik about it. He declined to comment, saying he, too, had just heard the news.
“I don’t have any details,” he said. “Until I get some information, I’m going to refrain from commenting.”
When I got back to the office, I called the California Highway Patrol in Orange County and confirmed that Kennedy had indeed been stopped in Newport Beach last night just before 9 p.m. The public information officer told me that Kennedy was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and arrested at 9:11 p.m on suspicion of driving under the influence.
