Washington: Ryan J. Verhaaren injured in fatal crash when Charlene Wilbur crossed center line and died in head-on wreck

01/24/2016 — A 2001 Subaru Legacy crossed the center line of East Smith Road just east of State Route 539, one mile north of Bellingham, in Whatcom County, Washington, and hit a truck head-on at 2:20 am on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, reports Washington State Patrol Trooper Williams.

The crash resulted in the death of the operator of the car who was identified as Charlene E. Wilbur, of Bellingham.  Police say that alcohol or drugs were involved in the cause of the crash and that Wilbur was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Ryan J. Verhaaren, 24, of Bellingham was the operator of the 1999 Dodge Ram and was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital by family while his passenger, Brandon E. Lumbert, 40, of Bellingham was also injured and was not wearing a seat belt.

Both vehicles were a total loss and towed from the scene.  No charges were placed.
