Wisconsin: Driver in Rollover Freeway Crash with 11 Children in Car was Intoxicated

Driver’s PAC at .16 – Twice the Legal Limit

Milwaukee, WI – Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene of a rollover crash on I-43 northbound at the 10th Street off-ramp Saturday at 2:10pm. There were 11 children in the vehicle, between the ages of 2 and 17. The 32-year old driver was arrested at the scene after failing standardized field sobriety tests and admitting she had been drinking alcohol.
The Dodge Durango hit the barrier wall and landed on its roof. The Milwaukee Fire Department and Bell Ambulance transported five children to Children’s Hospital. The 32- year old driver, the mother of seven of the children, was transported to the County Correctional Facility-Central (CCF-C). Four of the children were not hers.
In addition to OWI charges for causing injury with a child under 16, both misdemeanors, the Sheriff’s Office is also seeking charges for Felony Recklessly Endangering Safety, due to the number of occupants exceeding available seating in the vehicle and the danger she put the lives of children in that she was responsible for while being intoxicated. The children did not have the capacity to refuse to go along.
The six children who were not hospitalized were turned over to relatives.
“This is a good example of why I never believe that I’ve seen everything. This is crazy,” said Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.
