Florida: Ocala Police made 129 DUI arrests since Jan. 1; plan a bunch more for 4th of July weekend

From Ocala.com

OCALA – Beginning Monday and continuing through the 4th of July holiday, the Ocala Police Department will conduct a campaign to warn people about the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired.
The holiday, state officials note, is especially dangerous because, on average, there is an alcohol impaired driving fatality every 48 minutes.
“We want people to enjoy the holiday period responsibly, but we will be looking for those who have too much to drink and they will go to jail, said Sgt. Mike Sommer of the OPD Traffic Unit.
Sommer said a DUI arrest costs an average $8,000 to $10,000, which includes fines, court costs, attorney fees and increased insurance coverage.   ….MORE

From KFSN

FRESNO, Calif.  — Firefighters in the North Valley are honoring one of their own who died Sunday after a tragic crash. Andrew Maloney was riding his motorcycle in Los Banos when investigators say he was hit by a drunk driver.
Friends tell Action News, Maloney had an adventurous spirit and loved serving his community as a firefighter. But authorities say his life was cut short by a woman who was driving under the influence. And who witnesses say was also talking on her cell phone.
Flags are flying at half staff outside the fire station in Los Banos in honor of Andrew Maloney, who started his career more than a decade ago.
Capt. Mark Simmons said, “Every loss is tragic. This loss was extremely tragic to Cal Fire and Merced County Fire Department… it’s one of those things that hit really close to home this time.” ….MORE

From Palm Beach Post

As West Palm Beach fire department Capt. Rick Curtis fights to get his job back, his attorney isn’t surprised that the West Palm Beach Association of Firefighters won’t back the 15-year veteran.
Union president Tom Wesolek sent Curtis a letter on Thursday, informing him that the union won’t back Curtis’ grievance. Curtis was fired after he was convicted of a misdemeanor DUI last month, but he later filed a motion to have the case disqualified after Curtis said he learned that an adversarial firefighter, union vice president Doug Greene, had an “intimate relationship” with Judge Marni Bryson, who presided over the DUI case.
Bryson and Greene haven’t commented on the relationship, but Bryson disqualified herself from the case last week, which she said is required because of the complaint. Wesolek said Greene recused himself from the union grievance hearings.
Wesolek said he watched the entire six hour DUI trial and spent most of the week reviewing Curtis’ case before deciding not to fight to get Curtis’ job back.
“I felt the city had just cause for termination,” Wesolek said……MORE
