Vermont: Derek Seber will serve but 30 months for killing Renee Robbins in drunken crash

by admin ·

From WBAL
A former Vermont military college student who packed six classmates into his car after a party last fall and drove drunk, then crashed, killing one student and critically injuring three, was sentenced Tuesday to 2½ years in prison after more than two hours of emotional testimony from the victims’ families.
A judge accepted a plea agreement for Derek Seber, 23, of Gaithersburg, Md., giving him a suspended sentence of five to 12 years, with 30 months to serve, for the crash that killed Norwich University freshman Renee Robbins, 18, of Kentwood, Mich.
He called Seber a Jekyll and Hyde – a smart, ambitious student who had been accepted into West Point but had a dark side: his growing abuse of alcohol.
“Can you imagine the concentric rings of sadness and pain and tragedy that your moment of poor judgment has created?” Superior Court Judge Howard VanBenthuysen said. “It has rippled down through the world. Look at the number of people who are here today whose lives are forever changed by your behavior.”
Robbins’ father, Mark Robbins, a Massachusetts state trooper, said he could never forgive Seber for killing his firstborn child. He said if he could convince the judge that the death sentence is appropriate, he’d try.
“My daughters and her friends simply wanted a safe ride home, not a one-way hell ride down a windy rainy road,” he said. “You ignored their pleas to slow down and to stop driving recklessly…..MORE

State Police arrested Rochester-area attorney James Doyle and charged him with DWI and patronizing a prostitute.
State Police say they received numerous calls about an erratic driver on the New York State Thruway near the Clarence service station early Monday morning.
Troopers found the vehicle parked illegally at the Pembroke service area.
Investigators say Doyle was slumped over the steering wheel. Alicia Guastaferro, 20, was also in the car. She told troopers Doyle gave her a fake ID and bought her alcohol. She also told investigators that Doyle pays her to perform sexual acts and spend the night with him.
Police say Doyle refused a field sobriety test and he was charged with driving while intoxicated, patronizing a prostitute, and providing alcohol to a person under 21.
Guastaferro is charged with criminal impersonation, prostitution, and possession of a controlled substance.
Doyle sat down with YNN’s Cristina Domingues to tell his side of the story in an effort, he said, to clear his name. Portions of the interview are transcribed below.
Doyle: “I’ve been accused of allegations that are lurid, salacious and demonstrably false.”
Doyle: “I was tired. I wanted to rest and that’s exactly what I did. Within 10-15 minutes, there was banging on my window. I was taken out of my car.”
Doyle: “I’ve been accused of having a prostitute with me.   ….MORE
