A 22-year-old Houston man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to stop and render aid in a wreck Friday that left one person dead and two others injured
Edgar Carboso Cruz was speeding westbound in the 1000 block of West Mount Houston at about 10:15 p.m. Friday when his Ford Explorer hit the passenger side of a Chevrolet Cavalier, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A special counsel urged the state’s highest court Thursday to embrace measures, including tougher laws and changes in courtroom policy, to help erase the “appearance of leniency” in drunken driving cases decided by judges instead of juries.
Judges in some Massachusetts courts, particularly in Worcester County, acquit nearly all drunken driving defendants who waive their right to a jury trial, according to a yearlong study of the court system that recommends curbing “judge shopping.”
The study, commissioned by the Supreme Judicial Court last year following a Globe Spotlight series, recommended that defendants be required to choose a bench trial earlier in the process, instead of waiting until the last minute. Some defendants decide to waive their right to a jury trial on the day of the trial when a judge with a reputation for leniency appears on the bench

— A Worcester man accused of drunken driving in a fatal crash last week got his driver’s license back in July after a one-year revocation, driving records obtained by the Telegram & Gazette revealed.
Adam A. Bard, 28, of 48 Water St., who is facing charges in Central District Court stemming from a fatal crash Oct. 24 at Franklin and Grafton streets, also had his license indefinitely suspended on Oct. 25, a day after the crash.
Police petitioned the state Registry of Motor Vehicles for the indefinite suspension, saying Mr. Bard is an immediate threat to the community.

North Carolina: State Police charge Andres Alvarez-Salinas with DWI death of Jorge Lopez in triple flipper

A 25-year-old Gastonia man has been charged with DWI in a fatal crash that happened early Wednesday.
Andres Alvarez-Salinas, of 4242 Everest Drive, was driving his 2007 Toyota on Gaston Avenue about 3 a.m. with three passengers. Alvarez-Salinas was the only one in the car wearing a seat belt, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper H.O. Miller.
The car was traveling east near the intersection of Lowell-Bethesda Road when it crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road and flipped multiple times.
Jorge Lopez, who was riding in the front passenger’s seat, was ejected from the car through the sunroof, Miller said.

Virginia: Portsmouth Deputy Stephen M. Fredericks charged with DWI and smacking a cop

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A Portsmouth sheriff’s deputy has been charged with driving under the influence and assaulting a police officer after a hit and run involving a utility pole early Friday morning.
Jan Clark with the Portsmouth Police Department said officers received a call for a vehicle hitting a utility pole around 2:15 a.m. in the 5600 block of High Street. Calls from witnesses indicated a BMW was dragging a utility pole on the street.
As officers were en route, more calls came in suggesting the vehicle was in the area of Reese Drive and Castle Way. Once on scene, officers found a gray BMW with damage and a male driver who was uninjured.
