Let’s set aside the toasts for one week, and focus on a group of people we’d like to skewer right now: drunk drivers.
We have written often in the past several years about the stupidity of driving drunk, the prevalence of it in Texas (we’re No. 1, unfortunately) and the steps we support (sobriety checkpoints, for one) to cut down on the number of cases of driving while intoxicated. State and national governments and organizations also have preached, time and time again, the need for people to display some personal responsibility when it comes to their drinking habits, especially when they have the keys. And yet people continue to believe the law — and common sense, apparently — does not apply to them…..MORE

Maine: Marine sentenced for DWI crash

BRENTWOOD — A drunken Marine who rolled his truck on the Memorial Bridge during a March 2010 wind and rain storm was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail. Stephen Bolz, 23, of 6 Rogers Lane, Kittery, Maine, appeared in Rockingham County Superior Court Feb. 8 when he pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor count of aggravated driving while intoxicated. The plea was Bolz’s admission to being drunk on March 15 at about 1 a.m. when he rolled over and totaled his Chevrolet pickup truck, then was unable to offer an explanation. …MORE

• Dona L. Rintelman, 48, of Southbury, Conn., was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, around 5:30 p.m. Monday on Interstate 84 in Bedford. Police said her blood-alcohol level was 0.22 percent and that she was ordered to appear in Bedford Town Court on Feb. 17.
