New York: high court rules former officer has served enough time in DWI crash that injured two

Syracuse, NY – Former Syracuse police Officer Derek Backus does not have to go to state prison for severely injuring two suburban teenagers in a 2006 drunken-driving crash, a state appeals court ruled this afternoon.    In a 4-1 split decision, the state Supreme Court Appellate Division basically reduced Backus’ sentence to the eight months he already has served in the Onondaga County Correctional Facility in Jamesville…..MORE

New York: warrant sweep rounds up 24 convicted DWI drivers who failed to pay their fines; they cough up $25,000!

ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y.
– The Oneida County District Attorney’s Office has announced that a warrant sweep was conducted on February 16, 2011 to address warrants issued for failure to pay fines imposed on felony DWI convictions in Oneida County Court.   Complete list of those who still have not paid fines.
24 individuals were taken into custody for failure to pay those fines and more than $25,000 in delinquent fines was paid as a result of the warrant sweep…..MORE

CORPUS CHRISTI — A 29-year-old man asked Corpus Christi police to take him to jail after he crashed his 2007 Mercedes into a house in the 4300 block of Aaron Drive Sunday night.  A witness told police about 7:30 p.m. the Mercedes was speeding and the driver lost control, striking the side of the vacant house. A pickup is ready to be towed from the scene of a spectacular Saturday night crash into a railroad crossing arm pole near the intersection of Brookwood Avenue and Tualatin Valley Highway. Police say 36-year-old driver Jose Alfonso Contreras-Ramirez was under the influence when he hit two other motorists while eastbound on the highway before hitting the pole.
