Chase Vasser
From Atlanta Journal Constitution

Chase Vasser
, a junior outside linebacker from Gainesville, was arrested for driving under the influence back in May in Atlanta, Georgia officials confirmed on Thursday. The 21-year-old projected starter has been suspended for the first two games of the season as per UGA’s student-athlete conduct code, team spokesman Claude Felton confirmed late Thursday evening.
No other information was immediately available on Vasser’s arrest, which occurred May 11 in Buckhead. However, the Athens Banner-Herald reports that Vasser has a scheduled court appearance on Aug. 21 at the City of Atlanta Municipal Court.
The suspension of Vasser, who is 21, makes him at least the fourth defensive starter expected to miss playing time for the Bulldogs this season. Cornerback Sanders Commings is already suspended two games for a January arrest on domestic violence charges. Cornerback Branden Smith, safety Bacarri Rambo and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree are also facing suspensions for team rules violations but Georgia has not announced their punishments. ….MORE

Michigan: Another Thug of the NFL Story – Lions can Aaron Berry after he scores assault charges, following DUI arrest

by admin ·

From SI.com
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have been trapped in an unpleasant cycle this offseason: A player is arrested, the team expresses disappointment and then the process repeats itself.
On Monday, the Lions took an additional step after Aaron Berry‘s second arrest of the summer. They terminated the defensive back’s contract.
“We have repeatedly stressed to everyone in our organization that there will be appropriate consequences when an expected standard of behavior is not upheld,” Lions president Tom Lewand said.
The team said it cut Berry because of “personal conduct which adversely affects the club.”
Berry was arrested twice this offseason in Pennsylvania. Cpl. Kyle Gautsch of the Harrisburg Police Department said he was taken into custody early Saturday morning on three charges of simple assault. Gautsch said there “was a weapon allegedly brandished during the incident.”…MORE

New York: NFL’s Goodell tells all 32 teams to keep their drunken players on the field and off the roads

by admin ·

From Slam Sports
Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to all 32 teams asking them to reinforce the dangers of driving while impaired.
In light of recent DUI incidents, Goodell is expected to seek harsh penalties for players charged in alcohol-related incidents. At present, players are fined the equivalent of a game check up to $50,000, but Goodell hopes to increase the punishment as part of the new substance-abuse policy. That policy would be enacted when the league and NFLPA find middle ground in their ongoing debate on HGH testing.
The memo, published by CBS Sports, also instructs team officials to remind players to avoid “trouble spots and places that don’t provide adequate security” but “don’t try to provide your own security by carrying a weapon.”
The memo reads:
“There have been several negative law enforcement incidents in recent months involving both players and non-player employees. These incidents primarily have involved alcohol or drug-related offenses, specifically driving while impaired.  ….MORE
