The investigation determined the driver, Fredrick Zazueta, age 24 of La Quinta, had been traveling westbound on Hwy. 111 east of Cook St. when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle drove across the center landscaped median causing minor damage to landscape lighting and a city sign and came to rest in the eastbound lanes facing west. It was determined intoxication may have been a factor in this collision and Zazueta was booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio for driving under the influence.

The investigation revealed a white Toyota Prius was traveling eastbound on Highway 111 towards El Dorado Drive when it rear ended a yellow Toyota FJ Cruiser, which was stopped for the eastbound red light at El Dorado Drive.

The driver of the vehicle was determined to be Richard Kay Rockey, age 69 of La Quinta.

After the collision, the black Mercedes-Benz fled the scene westbound on Fred Waring Drive. A short time later, the black Mercedes-Benz was located in the shopping center at the corner of Fred Waring Drive and Highway 111.
