Texas: Police chief pleads for tougher laws on drunk driving

Police Chief William McManus will ask the City Council today to support legislation aimed at strengthening enforcement and punishment for drunken driving, citing statistics that show SAPD’s efforts at minimizing it haven’t worked.   SAPD data from 2008-2010 show that while the number of people arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated has increased, so too have the number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes.  
“Driving while intoxicated is pervasive and it’s devastating,” McManus told council members Wednesday. “Drunk driving occurs all over the city, and no one is immune from it.”   
Recently, a San Antonio police officer was killed and another seriously injured in separate wrecks involving drivers suspected of DWI. The crashes that killed Officer Sergio Antillon in October and severed Officer Michal Thornton’s foot last month have brought the issue to the fore, McManus said.   …MORE
