Minnnesota: Coach Tubby Smith nearly canned Trevor Mbakwe from team after DWI arrest

Coach Tubby Smith said that he nearly kicked off Trevor Mbakwe from the Gophers men’s basketball team following a DWI arrest by the Minnetonka police in July. But even though Mbakwe was already on probation for a previous legal incident, Smith said he opted to let the player remain on the team, providing he completes “some requirements.”
Mbakwe was arrested on July 1 on a DWI charge and pleaded guilty at a hearing Sept. 10.
According to court records, Mbakwe was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DWI. He was sentenced to 30 days in the Hennepin County workhouse, but that was stayed. Also, he was sentenced to 16 hours of community service and a one year of probation. He was fined $300, plus court costs of $78.
He was already on probation for violating a restraining order in Ramsey County in 2011. His probation for violating the restraining order runs through Dec. 12.
Mbakwe said in a text message to the Star Tribune that the DWI charge is not going to affect his status with the basketball team.
According to the police report, Mbakwe failed to pull to the right shoulder for a squad car responding to a burglary. When the call was canceled, the police vehicle was still behind Mbakwe, who was pulled over for failing to yield.
