On December 16th, 2011 members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint as part of the ongoing efforts to educate the citizens of Calvert County about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The checkpoint was set up on Route 260 in the area of Twin Shields Drive in Dunkirk, Calvert County, MD. The checkpoint was set up at this location based on statistical data compiled by the Calvert County Traffic Safety Council in reference to alcohol related crashes and alcohol related arrests. Funding for the checkpoint was provided from grant funds through the Maryland Highway Traffic Safety Office’s “Checkpoint/Strikeforce” program. A total of 1054 vehicles entered the checkpoint and were given an informational pamphlet regarding the State of Maryland’s DUI laws. A total of 5 people were tested when alcohol was detected to ensure they were not under the influence of alcohol, one person was arrested for a DUI related offense. The checkpoint was conducted from approximately 7 p.m. and concluded at approximately 9:30 p.m.
As a result of the checkpoint the following arrests were made:
(1)David Jerome Borak, 51, of Chesapeake Beach, MD: Charged with Theft under $100 for stolen registration plates and Driving while Suspended. Borak was also had an open arrest warrant for Fraud through Montgomery County.
(2) Melvin William Brown, 50, of Dunkirk, MD Charged with False Statement to a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Possession of CDS Paraphernalia, Driving While Suspended, Driving while displaying Suspended Registration, and other traffic related offenses.
(3) Stephen Clyburn, 51, Dunkirk, MD Charged with Possession of CDS Paraphernalia.
(4) Mark Edmund Robinson, 48, of Chesapeake Beach, MD — Charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and other related traffic offenses.
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police will continue to aggressively enforce the DUI laws of the State and will be conducting joint traffic safety initiatives throughout the Holiday season and into 2012.
Sheriff Mike Evans said, “Please be safe on the roads this holiday season and if you drink alcohol have someone else who has not consumed alcohol drive you to your destination. The Sheriff’s Office will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to make our roads as safe as possible.”
