Michigan: State Trooper John A. Beemer opts to have Judge instead of jury make key decision on his DWI arrest

SAGINAW, MI —
A suspended Michigan State Police trooper charged with driving drunk and crashing into a Saginaw County Circuit Court probation worker’s vehicle has opted to let a judge decide whether a serious injury occurred during the crash.
John A. Beemer, 45, elected to have Visiting Saginaw County Circuit Judge William J. Caprathe decide whether he’s guilty of a felony and a misdemeanor rather than have a jury decide the case.
Beemer, who lives in Thomas Township and remains on unpaid suspension, is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury and a misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.17 or above — the state’s “Super Drunk” charge.
