COACHELLA, CALIF. (Sept. 14, 2014) – According to Riverside Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Robert Castro, on Friday, September 12, 2014, beginning at 7:00 PM, the Coachella Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint in the area of Grapefruit Blvd and Mitchell Drive.  The goal of this checkpoint was to raise public awareness regarding the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, while removing impaired drivers from the roadway.

Approximately 1420 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Twenty-two vehicles were diverted to secondary screening. Five field sobriety tests were conducted.

  • Mario Gomez, age 27 of Indio, and Cristian Adrian Luna Frias, age 20 of Thermal, were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Both were booked in the Riverside County jail in Indio.
  • Five drivers were cited for driving without a valid driver’s license
  • Three drivers were cited for driving with a suspended license
  • One driver was arrested for a misdemeanor DUI warrant.
  • Five vehicles were towed

Statistics show that alcohol and drug impaired driving can lead to serious injury and/or death. The city of Coachella and the Coachella Police Department remain steadfast in its effort of reducing driver-impaired traffic collisions within the city, while increasing public safety and public awareness regarding the dangers of impaired driving.
