Kimberly Small believes she is saving lives. Robert Larin believes she is ruining them.
Small is a judge in the 48th District Court who has earned a reputation for being tough on first-time drunken drivers, requiring nearly all of them to serve jail time. Larin is a veteran attorney from Bloomfield Hills who believes the courts can send a message to first-time offenders without sending them to jail.
Small disagrees.
“This is really one of those crimes we have to stop before it happens,” she said Monday in an interview with the Birmingham Eccentric. “That’s the only way we get to save lives and prevent injury … because when someone gets behind the wheel drunk, they’re rolling the dice on our lives.” …..MORE
