Zygmunt Spicha charged with DUI homicide for killing bicyclist in Lancaster County Nebraska on Sept. 23, 2017

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff, on Saturday, September 23rd, at approximately 1738 hours, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputies and Southwest Rural Fire & Rescue responded to a fatality crash involving a motor vehicle and a bicyclist near SW 58th & West Sprague Road.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team was called to investigate the scene. The investigation revealed that sixty-six-year-old Zygmunt Spicha of Lincoln, NE, was traveling eastbound on West Sprague Road in a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Fifty-two-year-old

Randall Gibson of Lincoln, NE, was also traveling eastbound on West Sprague Road on a bicycle within the legal distance of the white line. Just east of the SW 58th Street intersection, Spicha struck Gibson with the front of his vehicle. Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene. Spicha did not suffer any injuries.

Spicha was lodged in jail for misdemeanor driving under the influence and felony motor vehicle homicide.

Police say that next of kin have been notified. Spicha was wearing a seatbelt and Gibson was wearing a bicycle helmet.

West Sprague Road is a two-lane, asphalt road with no paved shoulders.
