Local authorities are planning a crackdown on boaters who get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol over the Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kickoff of summer.
In addition to the usual checkpoints to catch those driving while intoxicated during the holiday weekend, Suffolk County police said they will also be stepping up patrols to bust those boating while intoxicated. A Nassau County police spokeswoman said similar plans are in the works in that county, although details were not immediately available.
“We will arrest anyone who is under the influence behind the wheel of a vehicle or boat,” Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said in a statement, adding that the department is doing “everything possible to keep residents safe during the holiday weekend.” ….MORE
