SELMA — In the pre-dawn hours of March 20, Selma police Cpl. Robert Hardcastle sat alone in his patrol car, idling in the median of Interstate 35 just south of Schertz Parkway, looking for speeding motorists. At 3:37 a.m., he found one. A dark pickup zoomed by in the southbound lane. Hardcastle’s laser clocked it traveling 101 mph in a 65 mph zone. Hardcastle radioed his department and began pursuit.
