California: Cops report driver who was killed and caused three others to die in head-on wreck was likely drunk

FRESNO, Calif.—California Highway Patrol investigators said Monday they think a drunken driver was responsible for a wrong-way collision that killed four people on a Central Valley highway a day earlier.
“You’d have to be pretty drunk not to see the warning signs, to not be able to see traffic coming at you,” said CHP spokesman Obed Macias, who added that toxicology reports are pending.
A 40-year-old Modesto man was driving his pickup north in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 in Merced County on Sunday evening, going as fast as 80 mph, before colliding head-on with a vehicle carrying six people, reports said.
The other vehicle was traveling about 70 mph. It flipped onto its roof and came to rest in the center median.
“You’re looking at an impact over 140 mph,” Macias said. “That’s devastating for both vehicles.” …MORE
