According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, a Martin County man was arrested after driving through the Palm City traffic homicide scene at excessive speeds, then ramming the patrol SUV of a Martin County Sheriff’s Watch Commander.

25-year old Johnathan Eckerd has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Vehicle on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, after he recklessly sped through the traffic homicide scene on Martin Downs Boulevard, where troopers were investigating the fatal crash from earlier tonight. Eckerd was driving so recklessly, he nearly hit the investigators on the scene.

Investigators say the truck Eckerd was driving blew past them at an extremely high rate of speed, jumped the curb, and went around an MCSO traffic deputy, who was also working the crash scene. Eckerd then took off southbound on Florida’s Turnpike.

A Martin County Sheriff’s traffic unit, along with Watch Commander Lt. Bill Dowdy, followed Eckerd and attempted to slow him down, but Eckerd rammed Lt. Dowdy’s SUV twice. Dowdy was eventually able to stop the truck, and Eckerd was arrested. Lt. Dowdy was not injured.
