ELKO — Amidst tearful pleas for leniency from his parents, a drunken driver convicted of killing his brother in a 2010 crash south of West Wendover was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday.
District Judge Nancy Porter sentenced Kevin M. Naranjo, 24, to the maximum 144 months and a $2,000 fine for the July 26, 2010, crash that killed his brother and injured a friend.
Naranjo’s parents both took the stand to deliver statements before Porter announced the sentence.
“We all have to make mistakes, and sometimes it takes a long time to learn from them and sometimes we have to learn the hard way,” Phyllis Naranjo, Kevin Naranjo’s mother, said through heavy tears.
“I believe what happened two years ago was an accident. I believe my son has suffered enough after losing his brother.”

Porter cited Naranjo’s second DUI arrest, which came after the incident that killed his brother, for the reasoning behind her maximum sentence.

“We have to consider the protection of society, and while your parents don’t have to hold you accountable for the death of your brother, the State of Nevada does,” Porter said.
