Latoya Rodriguez killed a woman on a mobility scooter in a crosswalk and fled the scene

The Greeley Police Department reports a fatal striking of a woman on a mobility scooter while in a crosswalk where the striking driver fled the scene, took place on November 17th, 2020, at 4:22 in the afternoon, officers were dispatched to a traffic accident with injuries at 13th street and 35th avenue. Several witnesses called 9-1-1 and stated that a red pickup truck hit a pedestrian at that location. Officers arrived at the scene along with medical personnel.

The elderly female victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died. The victim’s identity will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s office at a later time.

The Greeley Traffic Unit quickly began investigating the accident. The red GMC truck, driven by the suspect, struck the victim while riding her electric mobility scooter through the crosswalk on 35th avenue.

After the initial accident, the suspect fled the scene, dragging the scooter and debris from the 1300 block of 35th avenue to the 1900 block of 35th avenue. The suspect, 31-year-old Latoya Rodriguez, fled to her home in the 1200 block of 23rd Avenue, where she later called into dispatch.

Officers arrived at Rodriguez’s location, locating her and the 2007 GMC Sierra Truck in the driveway. Rodriguez was taken into custody and transported to the Weld County Jail for the following charges, Hit and Run traffic accident involving a death, failed to yield right of way to a pedestrian within a crosswalk, and driving under revocation (alcohol).

Elisia Guadalupe Llamas, 37, was a passenger in the car, according to the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

Just after midnight on Sunday, the driver lost control of the car on 83rd Avenue near 20th Street in Greeley, authorities said. The car rolled over at the roundabout.

No other vehicles were involved.

According to reports, Llamas was not restrained and was ejected from the car, authorities said. She was transported to a local hospital, where she died.

THE GREELEY TRIBUNE REPORTED:

Police suspect the 26-year-old driver, who was seriously injured in the crash, was drinking alcohol prior to the crash.

Police responded to the crash at 12:06 a.m. Sunday at the roundabout at 20th Street and 83rd Avenue. Police believe the driver, Andrew Llamas, 26, was headed westbound at excessive speeds and failed to negotiate the roundabout. He struck a large rock in the center of the roundabout, which remained displaced later Sunday morning.

On arrival, police found a bystander giving CPR to a crash victim. No other vehicles were involved. MORE
