The Illinois State Police say Sara Lopez, 22, was driving south in the northbound lanes of the Tri-State around 3:45 a.m. Sept. 13 and ran head-on into a car in which the off-duty cop, 27-year-old Steven Smith, was riding. Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was a former Marine who joined the southwest suburban police department

A Kendall County woman is being held on $350,000 bail, charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI in a wrong-way crash last month on the Tri-State Tollway near Oak Brook that killed an off-duty Chicago Ridge police officer.

The Illinois State Police say Sara Lopez, 22, was driving south in the northbound lanes of the Tri-State around 3:45 a.m. Sept. 13 and ran head-on into a car in which the off-duty cop, 27-year-old Steven Smith, was riding.
